The best overview currently available: A systematic review and meta-analysis (13 studies, n=1016) compared free weights vs. machines for strength, jumping performance, and hypertrophy. Result: No significant difference in muscle growth ; strength gains primarily follow the SAID principle (you get better at what you train).
